Bird made from Soap Stone.

Carving Soapstone is fun and easy.
The material is soft; once you
achieve your shape, start sanding with
different papers. Finish with polyurethane.

Bottega Christmas Show 2015

Happy to be a participant in the Bottega Christmas Show 2015.........I will be showing many birds, most are smaller in size. Large number of Chickadees and other birds for that perfect Christmas present. Nature is the ultimate gift.

Happy to say the show was a huge success. I sold one Chickadee and many inquiries about other birds I have done.  I showed some of my watercolour paintings and had a very positive response. I also sold many art cards on the weekend.

Getting noticed.

Being noticed!
I was interviewed and the show was broadcasted on  Shaw television in January 2015. I have been the subject of a article in the Okanagan Review magazine. I have shown my bird carvings in Lake country Art Walk........6 times in the past seven years. My birds have been purchased and are
now in homes across Canada. I will showcase my work at Bottega Christmas Market  again this year. I was in their 2014 show as well. I was invited to speak at the Kiwanis Club about bird carving and my watercolour paintings. I was invited to speak to the Newcomers Group twice. I really appreciate the support from everyone. A new store to Kelowna is Lee Valley tools and they are displaying my sculptures since August 2016 and have asked me to teach basic carving workshops starting in January 2017.

Gourd

I was asked to do a demo carving using a gourd as material; using burning tools this bird is the result.
I cut off a section of the bottom to allow the Gourd to sit properly. I then
made the tail piece and wings from the removed bottom. I used a
burning pen to give feather impressions. There is a slot in the body
and the tail is inserted at that point. The wings are glued on with
clear glue. A fun project and easy material to work with.

Artistic work is not' Free'.

Many people have checked out my work through my blog.
Only a few have made the inquiries about price. The average
amount of time per bird varies, but it takes about '60 to 70'
hours for a medium-size bird: getting the patterns, buying the
Basswood, acquiring the feet and eyes. The process includes,
carving the bird to size, texturing and burning all the feathers,
sealing and painting the bird. This is a painstaking process. I have
tried to make the birds life-like. Please appreciate the amount of
work that is required to create these works of art. I would be happy
to discuss commissions or individual pricing.

Art for Sale

When you buy from an independent
artist you are buying more than just
a painting, a novel or a song.
You are buying hundreds of hours
of experimentation and thousands
of failures. You are buying days,
weeks, months, years of frustration
and moments of pure joy. You are
buying nights of worry about paying
the rent, having enough money to
eat, having enough money to feed
the children, the birds, the dog.
You aren't just buying a thing, you
are buying a piece of heart, part of
a soul, a private moment in
someone's life. Most importantly,
you are buying that artist more time
to do something they are truly
passionate about; something that
makes all of the above worth the
fear and doubt, something that
puts the life into the living.
